Karakoram

The year before 9/11 happened and changed everything for this part of the world.. at least the Pakistan side of the border running up along the Afghan border. The people were so lovely – warm and friendly; looking back it feels like such a tragedy how this area suffered afterwards.. not just with the consequences of military action, but also severe earthquakes. I still think about the people I met and wonder what happened to them.

I only had a little bit of film with me so just a few snaps. At the time Pakistan had very strict import regulations on film and camera gear, and x-rayed all hand-baggage on arrival into Islamabad.. I had to grab my bag off the belt and leg into to the chaotic crowd before I could be stopped for a search.

I would love to revisit northern Pakistan but can’t see it happening.

On the road
Road crew. The Karakoram Highway is constantly being destroyed by earthquakes and landslides. During the summer season, when not closed by snow, permanent work crews camp out to keep the road open.
